overlayThumb BIRDS EYE VIEW (2008-09)
Artist Statement

I am an amateur birder. Birds often fade into the periphery of our human environment, but my hearing and sight is attuned to pick up an unfamiliar flit or call. Birds, like satellites, are able to rise above their environments and sense them remotely. I admire their migratory capacity, as they can leave when conditions are no longer ideal. Their relative freedom is attractive to me.

My fascination with birds also comes from a desire to encounter something out of the ordinary that I cannot control. On a visit to the Columbus Zoo, I became aware of how often visitors enter aviaries, quickly scan the enclosure, and pronounce that there is nothing to see. Inevitably, as soon as they departed, the flamboyant turquoise racket-tailed roller bursts forth and roosts close by, or the Bali mynah, of which there are only 14 known to exist in the wild, sails across in a flash of white and blue. Stillness and patience is all that is required to see them.

I want my artwork to operate like an aviary: for those who take time, perhaps they will be rewarded with a subtle, lovely moment.
