overlayThumb I call these photographs Lonescapes. Taken from the passenger seat of a moving car, a seat on a train or from an airplane, Lonescapes are meant to return to the traveler, with each static shot of movement, the part of the journey that is between destinations, the in-between places which represent the majority of our travels.

The views include both expected and unexpected sights but contradictory statements are formed by the varying speeds of machinery (i.e. camera, car) and the less predictable elements (decay, weather, human). These combine to make a more painterly than realistic statement to the eye. The details; the arc of a tire tread in the dirt contrasted against the flow of a zephyr spread out across a body of water, the billow of smoke from an industrial plant in the light of a fog-supressed sunrise, the blurred slab of a guardrail against lush summer growth are the things that hold my interest. These details become critical in expressing that the setting for life is motion and expanding our focus to include more of the journey is the goal.

I could not have taken these photographs without my husband, who likes to drive.
